In a surprising move, the Netherlands has initiated a project to create its own Git repository platform, sidestepping commercial options. The decision follows the recommendations of Jan Vlug, a software engineer, advocating for an open-source solution suitable for governmental needs. Previously reliant on GitHub and GitLab, both of which raise concerns over oversight and proprietary limits, the Dutch government has settled on Forgejo. This platform, fully free and open source, aims to enhance collaboration across agencies and ensure sovereignty over hosting. Launched on April 24, 2026, the platform is being adopted gradually, with ministries like Finance and Foreign Affairs already on board. The pilot phase invites developers to actively participate in building and refining the platform. This initiative underscores a commitment to open-source ideals, even in a bureaucratic environment.
