Coding assistants are useful. Up to a point. Here’s where that point is.
Letting autonomous agents write complex systems without oversight is just asking for problems and will accelerate the enshittification of many software systems.
My overarching sentiment is that coding assistants are most helpful at the start of their engagement. This applies both to brand new projects and invoking assistance on large existing projects. The coding assistants help me get started or help me clean up historical blind spots and oversights.
However, once we get into building new functionality, efficiency drops and at some point it’s better to reduce the coding assistant’s involvement to just occasional check-ups and reviews.
